Internship NOB
My internship at 'het Nationale Opera & Ballet' in Amsterdam. Specifically, I worked at the women's atelier for Opera.
I am very happy to have had my internship at the Nationale Opera & Ballet! I have had an amazing time working in the women's atelier of Opera, with Anette Schneider as my internship supervisor. I have learned so many things; working in the atelier, attend fittings and dress rehearsals etc.
At first, I mostly focussed on helping with tasks around the atelier. Along side this, I would get small projects from Anette that would help me understand patterns better. I would get an example garments and try to figure out the pattern, which one of them is the Rick Owens dress that you can find underneath.
After a couple weeks, I was able to start on projects for myself, whilest still working on costumes for the Opera. In my four months of internship, I ended up making basic patterns for myself, a pair of pants, a dress and a corset.
Half-way through my internship I discussed with Anette how I would love to also see more of the other side of the Costume process. She helped me by getting me in contact with the costume assistent Claire Nicolas. She worked in house for the Opera, and would help the costume designer with fittings, communication with the different ateliers etc. I was able to attend fittings and rehearsals, and see what else goes on in the costuming process. I was able to work with her for the production of 'The theory of everything', a children's opera. During this, I was also still working in the atelier, also on this production. The bodysuit was made by me, since I had already worked with stretch materials. With my practise of pattern-making, I was able to figure out the pattern, experimented in 1/2 size and then made it eventually with the printed fabric.
I am so grateful for this experience, since it helped me better my skills technically, as well as learn more about the process of a costume designer.
