HKU graduation film by Merel van Norel. Maarten (34), a caring, funny man with an intellectual disability, is experiencing sexual feelings for the first time in his life. Will Maarten be able to find acceptance for his desire for intimate contact?
Butterflies in your stomach, an erect penis—it's all new to Maarten (34), a caring, funny man with an intellectual disability. Curious, he begins a quest to discover what all these feelings mean. And more importantly, how to kiss.
What should have been a wonderful discovery turns out not to be for Maarten. Rejection and misunderstandings color his experience. Maarten is confronted with the various frameworks, myths, and ideas we are taught about love and intimacy. He must find his way and learn what he likes.
It was a truly amazing time working on this project, mostly due to the great cast and crew. I have learned a lot of new things, especially because of the interesting subject of the film. It opened my eyes to a world I never really been apart of. At first, I was a little nervous to work so closely together, especially with wardrobe. I wanted to make sure everyone would be comfortable, and I was afraid I would make mistakes. However, I noticed that this nervousness was gone quite quickly. The cast and crew were incredibly open and happy to work together. We laughed a lot, helped each other and worked hard on this beautiful project.
'Als de huid vraagt' has been nominated for the student competition of the 'Nederlandse Film Festival' 2025.
